Hearings by telephone
Hearings by telephone are held when parties or the Tribunal Member cannot attend the hearing in person. The CTTT may also decide to hold a hearing by telephone where it is the most timely and effective way to hear the matter.
Requesting a hearing by telephone
To request a hearing by telephone you must meet the following criteria:
- You are located 200 kms or 2 hours travel time from the hearing venue, or
- You cannot attend in person due to health or other personal reasons.
The request should be in writing and include documents to support your request. Applicants may make their request on the application form.
If your request is successful, make sure your telephone number is a direct line and that the telephone is located in a quiet room with no distractions.
Appearing by telephone
If you are appearing at your hearing by telephone, please ensure you take the following actions:
- Be ready to start the hearing at least 15 minutes before the start time
- Make sure you will not be interrupted during the call
- If using a telephone with a loudspeaker, test it is working before the hearing begins
- Be prepared and have all your paperwork with you
- At the time of the hearing, make sure you are sitting at your telephone
- During the hearing, listen carefully to the other party and the Tribunal Member. Do not interrupt or talk over anybody else.
Common questions
Can I use a mobile phone?
The CTTT prefers that you use a landline telephone. However, if you only have access to a mobile phone, make sure you will have good reception and that your mobile phone is fully charged before the hearing. The CTTT may not ring you back if your line drops out.
What happens if I am overseas?
If you are using an international telephone line for a hearing, you will need to incur the cost of the call. You will also have to note any time difference. The notice of hearing will provide you with a contact number that you will call, and a time to call which will be consistent with Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) or Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).
What if I need an interpreter?
The CTTT can arrange for a telephone interpreter service to provide assistance during the hearing. This service is free of charge. Learn more about requesting an interpreter.
What if the CTTT can't reach me on the number I provided?
If the CTTT is unable to contact you on the number provided, the matter may be heard in your absence and the decision made will be final and binding.
Can I get a transcript or sound recording of the hearing by telephone?
Hearings by telephone are sound recorded and a copy of the sound recording or transcript may be ordered at cost from the CTTT. Learn more about sound recording.
